Green Drive: 1,000 Saplings Distributed by OCDS and Infant Jesus Shrine in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 11: The Secular Carmelites of St. Teresa of Avila Community (OCDS), Mangaluru, in collaboration with the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, observed World Environment Day with a meaningful programme aimed at promoting environmental awareness and care for creation. As part of the celebration, nearly 1,000 saplings were distributed to the faithful, encouraging families to actively participate in environmental conservation.

Fr. John Francis Sequeira, Provincial Superior of the Karnataka-Goa Province of the Discalced Carmelites, attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized humanity’s responsibility as stewards of God’s creation.

“Every human being is a steward of creation and not its owner. Since we are only stewards, we have the responsibility to protect, nurture, and preserve the beauty of God’s creation. We have no right to destroy what belongs to God,” he said.

Highlighting the spiritual dimension of environmental care, Fr. Sequeira noted that concern for nature is not merely an ecological issue but a moral and spiritual obligation. Referring to the vision of Pope Francis, he urged people to adopt sustainable lifestyles that respect and protect the environment.

Following the address, saplings were distributed free of cost to participants, symbolizing a collective commitment to safeguarding the environment through tree planting and nurturing. The initiative was spearheaded by Mr Gratian, President of the OCDS Community, with the active support of fellow members who assisted in the distribution of saplings.

The programme was compered by Mrs Evelyn Rodrigues. Among those present were Fr Melvin D’Cunha, Superior of St. Joseph’s Monastery; Fr Stifan Perera, Director of the Infant Jesus Shrine; Fr Dominic Pinto of the Diocese of Lucknow; and Fr Ashwath D’Souza.
